St. Louisans Invited to “Pedal the Cause” for Local Cancer Research

St. Louisans Invited to “Pedal the Cause” for Local Cancer Research

St. Louis-- St. Louis is home to several world-class cancer facilities, including Siteman Cancer Center, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. The research conducted here will benefit cancer patients locally and around the country, and will receive a significant financial boost this October from the third annual Pedal the Cause cycling challenge. Several thousand cyclists and several hundred volunteers are needed to make this event a success.

Founded by Bill Koman, last year’s Pedal the Cause event raised $1,325,000 to help fund cancer research. 100% of fundraising proceeds is already at work towards winning the battle on cancer by researchers right here in our community. This was made possible by the efforts of more than 1,300 cyclists, 500 volunteers and 10,000 donors. More than 1,400 cyclists have already registered and begun fundraising for the 2012 event.

Bike To Work On Friday, May 18th

National Bike to Work day is Friday, May 18th, and tens of thousands of Missourians will be riding again this year--the first year Bike to Work Day has been an official part of the Missouri State holidays calendar.

"Bicycling to work is on a huge upward swing in Missouri," said Brent Hugh, Executive Director of the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation. "From 2000 to 2010, the amount of bicycling to work increased by 70%.  In our large metro areas, the story is even more dramatic--biking to work almost tripled in both Kansas City and St. Louis over the past decade."

The increases in bicycling to work put Missouri well ahead of the national trends.  Overall in the U.S., bicycling to work increased by 40% from 2000 to 2010.
