Developers Marketing Campaign Ruffles Feathers In Chesterfield | News
ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI) – St. Louis City developer Brent Crittenden says he’s been trying to redevelop the Botanical Heights area in South St. Louis for years. An area once plagued with crime and drugs.
His company UIC spent 10 million dollars and built a new Montessori school, bakery and dozens of homes in the area. UIC’s creative team wanted to draw attention to the project, and came up with the slogan “Friends don’t let friends live in Chesterfield.”
“Honestly it was geared towards people who were interested in the city already more than people who would be choosing between Chesterfield and the city.” said Crittenden.
Workers passed out bumper stickers, t shirts and coasters. The campaign was so successful the company got 30,000 hits on their Facebook page on the first day. However, not everyone was thrilled with the message, Crittenden got word that people chesterfield were not happy. Chesterfield mayor Bruce Geiger responded to the campaign by saying,
“I do congratulate the developer on his marketing program. He has accomplished his objective, bringing attention to his development and also to chesterfield.
The more appropriate slogan would be: ‘what kind of friends don`t let their friends live in chesterfield.”
The UIC team says they’re looking forward to bringing more business to St. Louis city to help build a better city for the future.
“There are a lot of positive things in the city and it is really feasible.” he said.
