Police did evacuate some nearby homes while they investigated.

“You have to treat everything as if it is real and proceed accordingly. And that`s why the precautionary evacuations and why we call out the experts to handle it,” said Lieutenant Darla Gray with the St. Louis Police Department.

Police tell us the device was a toy like prop that was used as part of a Halloween costume. It was mistakenly left behind by the old tenant. No charges will be filed.

While on the scene police did discover an unrelated natural gas leak across the street. That was quickly repaired.
